Institute of Liberal Arts (ILA) is a full-fledge Institute explicitly on the American model that seeks to develop "general intellectual capacities" rather than professional, vocational, or technical skills. This distinguishes the institute from other similar academic institutions in the UK. Unlike the BA programs offered by other institutions in the region, the courses offered by ILA are not restricted to a particular area of study. Students are therefore free to pursue courses from many different departments in order to satisfy their diverse interests. All degree programs offered by the institute are designed to incorporate fundamental skills that are applicable in a broad range of fields.
